Winter Getaways

This week’s edition of Travel Tuesday sees us focus on winter holiday destinations. Join us on a journey through some of the most celebrated holiday destinations around the world, from the exotic to magical winter getaways.

Barbados

If it’s a switched off holiday you’re looking for then Barbados should be top of your list. White sandy beaches line the idyllic island and secluded coves provide the perfect place to unwind and forget about the stress of your job back home. The coral reef lined shores make for a great place to put on a snorkel and explore the wide variety of local tropical fish, you can also sign up for an excursion to swim with exotic sea turtles. The best way to get around is by renting a car, there are plenty of places that offer car hire at a reasonable price and, with the island being relatively small, it won’t take long to explore the hidden gems that the island has to offer. Dining in Barbados varies from low key to up market restaurants providing fine dining experiences in breath taking locations. We’d highly recommend trying some of the local Caribbean cuisine, as the blend of herbs and spices used in traditional Bajan dishes make for mouth-watering meals, particularly the national dish of flying fish. Be prepared to be welcomed with open arms by the incredibly hospitable locals who are more than happy to sit back and enjoy some rum with you while you relax on the beach.

Kitzbühel

One of the most famous ski resorts in the world and arguably the best in Europe, Kitzbühel is a must for any ski fan. However, even if skiing isn’t your thing there’s still something for everyone in this strikingly spectacular walled medieval town. Designer shops line the streets alongside an abundance of bars and restaurants, both traditional and modern. The town attracts many exclusive visitors each year who no doubt spend vast sums of their hard earned money on designer goods and fine dining. The nightlife scene in Kitzbühel is legendary and proves why Austria is so well loved for its après ski.  Aside from all of the glitz and glamour the resort boasts a pretty impressive array of slopes; the runs cover a vast area and are ideal for the more intermediate level skier. The Hahnenkamm Mountain boasts the famed Der Steif race course which is part of the world cup circuit for the daredevils who want to test themselves against the pros.

New York City

We know this one isn’t the most inspired choice, but we really don’t care. It’s that special of a place. What can we say that hasn’t already been said about this great city? New York is amazing any time of the year, but it’s just that extra bit more magical around the winter, with the crisp air whistling between the skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of the streets seems that little bit less frantic with a thick layer of snow cover. There’s actually so much to do in New York that you’ll struggle to find time to fit it all in. From ice skating at the Rockefeller centre, to strolling down Broadway to take in a show, there’s something for everyone in New York City. The cosmopolitan nature of the city means that every culinary need is met and some of the bars and restaurants are unparalleled, not to mention you get the portion sizes that come with being in the US. Win, win! Just make sure to wrap up warm and the city that never sleeps won’t disappoint.

Cuba

As the cold weather is beginning to grip her in the UK, we thought we would finish the round up with another sun soaked spot. Cuba boasts a Caribbean climate all year round so you can be sure to have your fair share of sun on a winter visit. If sunbathing on exotic beaches is your thing, Cuba has it. If wandering round vibrant streets that are full of life is your thing, Cuba has it. If you like rolling hills and an expansive countryside, Cuba has it. Can you see the pattern emerging here? World renowned for its eccentric style, think low riders and rum-drinking aplenty, Cuba is a perfect place to forget everything and immerse yourself in a different culture this winter. It’s easy to see why it has been home to many a famous writer over the years. So, what are you waiting for? Beat the winter blues and pack your bags for an unforgettable experience.
