Versace to collaborate with British rap artist M.I.A

Versace have been a big part of the fashion world since 1978 and decades later, they still have their finger on the pulse for hot new muses of the music and film zeitgeist.

Versace have become quite the coveted name in the world of rap music lately and have officially announced a  collaboration with British rapper M.I.A.  The ‘Paper Planes’ and ‘Bad Girls’ songstress let slip (in an interview with SPIN magazine) at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week that she would be working with the Italian luxury brand in November.

M.I.A was once known on the trendy London alt-music scene as the Sri-Lankan rapper from Hounslow who created amazing funk-carioca beats, electro-clash tracks and paraded in colourful 1980s style tracksuits and day-glo leggings. Her place on MTV’s alternative music show ‘120 minutes‘ was firmly cemented until her fame took off in 2008 when her single ‘Paper Planes’  went three times platinum and was featured on the soundtrack for comedy film ‘Pineapple Express’.  She eventually won a Grammy for ‘Record of The Year’ as it was the 29th most downloaded track of the digital era. Since then praise has been heaped on the 38-year-old singer, director, rapper and mother whose new album Matangi is released on November 5th.

The collaborative collection which is both inspired and helped into design by M.I.A herself (real name Mathangi Arulpragasam) is being released as part of the  edgy Versus diffusion line headed by Donatella Versace. Versace most recently were involved with the lavish music video of rapper Migos for his aptly titled song ‘Versace’ and have dressed the biggest, baddest artists from Lady Gaga to Canadian dream-pop singer Grimes and hip-hop star 2-Chainz.

We hope the M.I.A collection will replicate her unique, thrown together -glamorous 1990s style  which sets her apart from almost every other artist out there. Expect plenty of colour splashes and prints! We hear she’s a big fan of sunglasses too. We can’t wait!
