Travel Tuesday – South Africa

This week’s Travel Tuesday sees us travel to the heart of the African continent and dream of all South Africa has to offer. South Africa really does have it all, from picturesque coastlines, expansive savannah and bustling cities. The exchange rate also makes a trip to South Africa even more attractive as innumerable bargains can be had throughout the trip. We thought we’d give you a roundup of some of the best attractions and places to visit.

Cape Town

Table Mountain dominates the skyline of this charming port city, which is a melting pot of different cultures with an abundance of hotels and restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking for a switch off then you will be more than happy unwinding on the idyllic beaches which border the city. If you’re looking for a bit more of an adrenaline raising activity then a popular tourist activity are the shark diving excursions which offer you the chance to see the predators up close and personal. Another good way to take in the city is to take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain for a spectacular panoramic view of the whole of Cape Town. Other excursions include the awe inspiring trips to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent many years in captivity, or the short tips to the local vineyards to sample some of the world famous South African wines. In fact, there’s not really much you can’t do in Cape Town and a trip to South Africa wouldn’t be complete without a visit.

Journey to the capital of South Africa and you’ll see the spirit of the national perfectly manifested by the many urban renewal projects sprouting up around the city. The vastly developed areas have created a hip, yet unpretentious and friendly place to while away your days. One of the best ways to take in the city is via the open top bus tours which enable you to take in all of the historic and architectural delights that the Joburg has to offer without having to walk yourself into a blistered mess. Another popular attraction is the Neighbourhoods market located in the Braamfontein area which houses artisan food and drink stalls where people sample goods from all over the country. As with most big cities, Johannesburg boasts a varied and vibrant nightlife scene that is perfect for unwinding after long days of exploring.

Best of the Rest

No trip to Africa would be complete without a safari trip and South Africa has some of the best safari excursions on offer anywhere with the Kruger National Park drawing in thousands of visitors every year. You can take in the breath taking number of different animal and floral species that inhabits the park either by motorised transport or guided walking tours. At night you can unwind in one of the luxurious lodges which blend perfectly into the landscape. There’s also the coastal city of Durban if you’re looking to explore some aquatic lifeforms or a beach break. Or there’s Pretoria if you’re in the mood for a more culturally themed visit with countless museums and landmarks.
