Welcome back to another B Sunglasses Round-up, the weekly sunglasses news blog that gathers together everything that happens in the eyewear industry and puts it all in one place. Last week, we looked at supermodel Josephine Skriver’s new sunglasses design and the seizure of 245,000 sunglasses in Madrid – a massive win in the ongoing battle against knockoff sunglasses. This week, we’re looking at the upcoming 360° camera sunglasses, the Orbi Prime. We’re also going to talk about our recent buying trip to the Safilo HQ in London, where we secured some exciting new collections from top designers Fendi, Jimmy Choo, and more! We’ll also be reporting back on the success of our Brave the Shave campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support!

 

New 360° Camera Sunglasses in Development

Technology is finding its way to our sunglasses more and more. Take the recent Oakley Radar Pace, for example, or the soon-to-be-released Snapchat glasses – and even the utterly failed experiment that was Google Glass. Well the new eyewear technology story this week is the Orbi Prime: sports sunglasses that allow you to take 360° photographs and videos without handling them. The Orbi Prime is more like a GoPro than Google Glass, and it is boasting some impressive specs:

  • Capture ultra-high HD photographs in full 360° with real-time multi-layer stabilisation on the camera
  • You can edit your photos on your phone as you go and share them with friends instantly
  • The lenses of the sunglasses are polarised and provide UV protection (glad they haven’t forgotten the basics!)
  • There are no mounts or rigs required on the glasses. They sit on your head just like a normal pair of sunglasses
  • Water-resistant design
  • The Orbi Prime can record up to 90 minutes of footage

If you’re interested in this project, you can back it on Indiegogo. Backing it will give you early-bird access, meaning that you can get it before it hits the market. We’re impressed with the technology and the fact that they are high-tech sunglasses that haven’t forgotten to look good and protect their wearer’s eyes from the sun. We wish this project well and expect to see it in shops in the near future.

 

Brand Focus: Saint Laurent

As we recently acquired a huge range of incredible sunglasses and glasses from Saint Laurent, we thought we’d take a little look at the brand, its history and some of our highlights from its newest eyewear collection!

Saint Laurent is one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. It was started by Yves Saint Laurent back in 1966. Before he started up his own fashion label, however, Laurent worked for world-famous designer Christian Dior. Laurent’s incredible dress designs quickly made him stand out from the other designers, and it was only a matter of time until he started up his own label. In 1983, Yves Saint Laurent was the first living fashion designer to have a solo art exhibit at the New York Met and his reputation in the design world was legendary. The brand is Laurent’s legacy, and its new eyewear line captures the suave, modern aesthetic he was so revered for. There is a subtle European aesthetic at play that manages to take vintage 60s and 70s style and modernise them with slightly finer frames, bolder lines, or new materials. B Sunglasses Braved the Shave

Some of you might have already heard about the Brave the Shave Challenge. It’s an initiative from Macmillan Cancer Support to try and raise money for their incredible work supporting people affected by cancer. As so many people suffering from cancer lose their hair due to chemotherapy, those who ‘brave the shave’ are committing an act of solidarity and helping raise as much money as possible for the cause.

We’ve been raising money on our Just Giving page for almost a month now ahead of the event and we absolutely shattered our initial target of £500. At the moment it almost at the £1,400 mark and it’s still rising!

We also sold cake on the day and raise an additional £100 for Macmillan, so we’ll be adding that to the pot as well!

On Tuesday, B Sunglasses’ very own Philly, Jake and Matt finally braved the shave, along with Ivan and Phil from Elite. The boys’ heads are a little chilly now, but it was totally worth it. For posterity, we recorded the whole event and made a video. Check it out below:

 

 

B Sunglasses’ Buying Trip to London

Last week, B Sunglasses took a little trip down to Savoy Square in London to Safilo’s HQ to consider buying in updated collections of a series of top eyewear designers, such as Fendi, Carrera, Jimmy Choo, and Marc Jacobs. It was an exciting trip and we’re really pleased to be adding even more to our extensive collections. So keep an eye on our Fendi, and Cerrera pages for updates in the near future, and for our brand new Marc Jacobs and Jimmy Choo collections!
