Hello and welcome to another B Sunglasses Round-up. Each week, we’re bringing you the latest sunglasses and eyewear news, packing it all into one place so that you don’t have to go looking for it. On last week’s round-up we looked at the measures Facebook was going to to make it difficult for people to sell fake sunglasses on its social media channel. This week, we’re looking at Snapchat’s sunglasses, which are now getting their own prescription lenses. We’re also looking our brand new Christmas competition, a special secret discount code promotion on our website, and our collection of Clubmaster sunglasses.
Prescription Lenses are Coming to Snap’s ‘Spectacles’
There’s been loads of buzz around Snap’s (Snapchat) new sunglasses. The sunglasses, called Spectacles, have built-in technology that allows the wearer to take short videos and send them to their friends.
The big news this week is that Rochester Optical, a specialist lens company, has announced that they will be working on making prescription sunglasses for Snap’s Spectacles. This is a pretty huge development as Snap has been marketing their new sunglasses to a mainstream audience and many people who might have been interested will have had to say no when they realised they couldn’t get them in their own prescription. It’s still unclear how much the additional prescription lenses will cost, but given Rochester Optical’s history making lenses for Google Glass, Microsoft HoloLens, and Sony SmartEyeglass, it’s unlikely to be cheap. We’re keeping an eye on any new developments on Snap’s new sunglasses and we’ll include any further stories in our roundups!
This month, we have a new competition here at B Sunglasses! Enter the competition for a chance to win £200 worth of gift vouchers. The vouchers are split into two different vouchers, so you could even give them away as presents. The lucky winner will get a £100 B Sunglasses voucher and a £100 Soleheaven voucher. Watch this blog for more information!
Brand Focus: Tom Ford
Tom Ford is a designer who perhaps doesn’t need an introduction. But the point of these weekly brand focuses is to home in on an important fashion influencer and tell our customers a little about them, and as we stock so many Tom Ford sunglasses and seem to buy so much more each season, we thought we’d take a brief look at him. You can read the longer Tom Ford brand focus here.
Tom Ford really made a name for himself in the fashion industry when he became creative director for Gucci in 1994. This was more than a little surprising when you consider that he was an American running the creative side of a huge Italian fashion house. However, Gucci was in serious trouble and it needed Ford’s fresh eyes. Under Tom Ford’s leadership Gucci’s sales increased by 90 per cent, bringing the company back from the edge of bankruptcy.
Gucci later acquired Yves Saint Laurent, and Tom Ford was appointed creative director of the Paris fashion house as well. Although YSL didn’t warm to Ford as much, he still won numerous awards as their creative director. Then, in 2006, Tom Ford started up his own fashion house, named after himself. With his new company, he brought all of the European style he had experienced in Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent and combined it with his contemporary American sense of style. The result was something incredibly fresh, with some of the most beautiful eyewear in the world (the clothing, accessories and fragrances are great too, but we’re a little one-sided in our attentions). You can check out our Tom Ford sunglasses here, and our Tom Ford glasses here, but here are a few highlights to whet your appetite:
B Sunglasses Has Hired Some Christmas Elves
It’s always nice to decorate the office in Christmas cheer, so we’ve hired some elves to spruce up the B Sunglasses HQ. They wasted no time in covering the place in decorations and the office is a much nicer to place to work as result. In case you don’t believe us about the elves, we managed to get some footage of them diligently working away in the office…
Choosing Your Own Clubmaster Style Sunglasses
Clubmasters are one of Ray-Ban® iconic sunglasses styles, along with Aviators and Wayfarers. But since clubmasters came on the scene back in the 50s and 60s, other eyewear designers have also had a go at making their own slant on Ray-Ban® classic browline sunglasses. Only Ray-Ban® can make Clubmaster sunglasses, but others make clubmaster style sunglasses. A pair of sunglasses qualifies as Clubmaster style if it has an emphasised brow and it is rimless on its lower hemisphere. Other than that, you can design the glasses and sunglasses however you like. It’s one of the most distinctive styles and you can shop the entire Clubmaster collection here, but here are a few highlights from the collection:
