Welcome to another B Sunglasses Round-up. Each week we bring you the latest sunglasses news as well as stories about our new collections, buying trips, competitions, and anything else we think our readers might find interesting. Last week, we talked about our buying trip to see the new sunglasses collections at Marchon in Amsterdam. This week, we’re talking about our buying trip to Milan to see Luxottica’s stunning range of designer sunglasses, including new models from Ray-Ban®, Prada, MIU MIU, Oakley, and Persol!
Luxottica Buying Trip in Milan
AW17 Michael Kors sunglasses
This week, our buying team were flown across to Milan then chauffeured onto the beautiful Lake Como in Italy for the last of the AW17 eyewear buying days with Luxottica, the biggest luxury eyewear supplier in the world. The buying trip was split over two days and the team were able to preview the latest releases from some of the World’s top eyewear brands.
The Michael Kors collection at Luxottica took inspiration from their accessories collection. Their latest AW17 releases include beautiful mother of pearl detailing behind the iconic Michael Kors charm logo. There are also stars and smaller versions of some of our favourite MK styles, including flat lenses and colour block stories.
Emporio Armani uses contrasting materials in their AW17 collection and we were impressed, as ever, with the quality and vision behind their newest eyewear.
For Burberry London, it’s all about oversized sunglasses. And the iconic Burberry patchwork bag has clearly been a massive influence on their latest eyewear collection. There are also lots of heritage pieces that have made it into the AW17 collection, which is great news for those who love the classic Burberry check.
Just as with some of our favourite Saint Laurent pieces, Ralph Lauren has also gone for a disconnected logo on the hinge of their newest sunglasses. This playful approach to the logo may well be the defining feature of 2017.
AW17 Ralph Lauren Aviator sunglasses
We were impressed with the elegance of Polo Ralph Lauren’s classic round wayfarer and aviator styles for men, as well as tasteful pops of colour on the sporty styles. And Ralph by Ralph Lauren exhibited some exceptional front metal details. Everything from Ralph Lauren felt fresh and we’re sure it’ll prove very popular over the coming months.
Gigi Hadid is the face of the new Versace AW17 campaign. Versace’s story centres around the iconic Versace Medusa medallion, playing with this classic icon in various interesting ways.
There was an amazing AW17 collection from Oakley. The B Sunglasses team’s favourite additions were the two new Holbrook styles the round (smaller in size) and mixer (same front and look as the original Holbrook, wood front with metal arms).
We noticed a big trend across all brands for combination frames (mixing materials such as metal and acetate), pastel colour pops, and stars. These motifs reoccurred in different interesting ways across most collections. It’s fascinating to visit Luxottica and be able to directly compare the different brands, spotting the similarities as well as the differences. It’s one of the many perks of working for one of the biggest sunglasses retailers in the UK!
Ray-Ban® new iconic styles make use of photochromatic lenses in both round and Aviator styles. For those who don’t know, photochromatic lenses change shading, from dark to light, or vice versa, depending on the light around you. This means you can see clearly when the sun is overcast and you get enough shade when the sun is shining. The ‘Marshall’ is the next big Ray-Ban® style to look out for: it features flat lenses, flat temples, a double bridge, and a smoother change of colour in the mirror gradient on the lenses. There are also lots of colour refreshes of best-selling Ray-Ban® styles, including the popular Ja Jo Round, launched earlier this year. The Ray-Ban® Blaze collection also now features an Aviator shape – this is something die-hard Ray-Ban® fans have been asking for ever since the Blaze collection came out!
MIU MIU was also as impressive as always, with gorgeous cateye cut outs, flat lenses, and sparkles a plenty. Over 470 crystals are hand applied to the special project sunglasses. And MIU MIU’s sister company, Prada, have some gorgeous additions to their Cinema style. There is the same construction as the current style, but without the acetate front. They have classic flat metal temples with acetate temple tips and beautiful engraved lenses. Prada also boasts some beautiful heritage pieces with a new metal plaque logo on the temple next to the hinge. There were also standout pieces from Prada Sport, such as their Shield styles, their Wayfarers with metal temples, their raised brow bars, their super light and flexible rimless shapes, and their ultra-resistant rubber.
The latest Dolce & Gabbana AW17 collection takes inspiration from a British-owned villa in Sicily, the flower prints on each frame are inspired by the flowers in the villa. There are also colour refreshes of some of D&G’s best sellers and styles, with lace inside acetate, oversize chunky cateyes, and cateyes with metal bridges.
The entire Milan buying trip was incredible and we’re looking forward to seeing how our regular customers react to the new items we’ll be adding to our different collections over the coming months!

Brand in the Spotlight: MIU MIU
This week’s brand in the spotlight is MIU MIU. Eve wrote a comprehensive spotlight on MIU MIU on Thursday that you can read here. However, I’d like to cover a little bit about this incredible brand on this roundup as well!
MIU MIU is reasonably new to the designer fashion scene, as it was founded in 1992 by Miucca Prada, who is part of the incredible Prada fashion dynasty. Although MIU MIU is connected with the Prada brand, it has its own identity and sense of style. MIU MIU has an opulent, luxe aesthetic that stands out against Prada’s sleek, minimalism. MIU MIU focuses on staying ahead of the fashion world, always innovating. It also has a distinctly feminine sense of style that is exemplified in its sunglasses.
