Across the world in Saudi Arabia, models took to the runway for the country’s first Arab Fashion Week ever. The event has major significance, opening in an ultra-conservative kingdom. Even a couple of years ago it would have been unthinkable for Saudi Arabia to host this kind of event. The fashions displayed were items women might wear in private, and the audience were female only. The style was extravagant, with lots of detailing, sequins and beans like on the gowns showcased by Tony Ward and Bibisara. Other designers there were Jean Paul Gaultier, and Saudi Arbia’s Arwa al-Banawi who presented strong female clothing like business suits. Banawi said her designs send a strong message about female empowerment at a time when Saudi Arabia is lifting harsh restrictions on women driving and in the workplace. The whole event is inspiring, and we’re desperate to see all the extravagant clothing and eyewear showcased on the runway.
In other eyewear news, over in Chicago a generous business owner has donated 100 pairs of virtual reality sunglasses to the Palmetto health children’s hospital. The ward uses VR glasses for children to escape from the frightening or painful procedures they must undergo in hospital. Richard Oleff, a successful businessman, heard about this work at the hospital and donated 100 new pairs of glasses so now the kids have enough for each of them rather than only a couple to share before. This hospital really show us what eyewear technology can do for us.
