The final week of Fashion Season in Paris was well-awaited. With big designers like Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, and Stella McCartney eager to showcase their SS19 collections. Here’s all the glamorous highlights…
Stella McCartney’s Debut Show
Stella McCartney pulled out all the stops for her first show since taking full control of her design house. Earlier this year, McCartney bought the fifty per cent stake owned by Kering and now owns the entirety of her label. The split will be finalised in March 2019 and has already taken a lot of consideration from her. “You don’t take that decision lightly. It’s something that I’ve taken incredibly seriously, and it’s been a long process,” McCartney said. “Having control of the company is important when your name is above the door, and I think if you have that option it’s rude not to.” Famous faces like Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevigne came out to support Stella McCartney’s new collection.
For her SS19 collection, McCartney pulled together a fresh spring palette of washed out neons and pastels. The show was held in the Opera Garnier, and models walked in the reflections of the shimmering mosaic ceilings. There were mini-dresses, jumpsuits, vibrant prints, pale suits for the men with combat style trousers, and handbags made from faux leather. Of course, as with any of McCartney’s collection, it is completely eco-friendly. No fur, no leather.
McCartney is ever-vocal about the importance of eco-friendly fashion. In September, London became the first fashion capital to go fur-free when all the designers got rid of fur in their shows. McCartney praised the work of fellow designers, following in her footsteps to combat fur for fashion. However, she did comment that the real test on the use of fur would come when designers began preparing their winter collections. McCartney proves time and time again however, that fur is never essential for an outstanding collection, be it summer or winter.
Stella McCartney’s eyewear is edgy, daring, and as colourful as her new collection. Check out this stunning pair from her latest range…
Alexander McQueen’s Edgy Femininity
Sarah Burton constantly revitalises Alexander McQueen, but does so in an extraordinary way that means the history of the label is never lost. For SS19, Burton showcased a beautiful blend of the feminine and the edgy. Long-sleeved dresses with slits across the bodice, over the shoulders and up the skirt were the star of the show. There was also corseted leather jackets, and stacks of chunky necklaces and hanging pendants. Leather and lace were put together to create a dark romanticism that the brand is known for.
The show was held inside the Jardin du Luxembourg’s Orangerie du Senat, and models walked dreamily in front of an impressive line-up of guests. Burton also gets marks for the most talked about hair styling of fashion week. Models were styled with a gelled wet-look hair style, sleek and striking. Others walked in long, winding braids that added as much to the look as the accessories worn. Hairstylist Guido Palau said the styles were severe, almost mythical, “like a Game of Thrones-type character.” He added “There is a beautiful, romantic aspect to the look, which is also very Sarah. She’s really developed this aesthetic that showcases femininity and strength.”
Alexander McQueen’s collections are always contemporary and edgy and this goes for their eyewear collections too. Here’s a top style of sunglasses from their range…
Saint Laurent’s Eiffel Tower Infinity Pool
Saint Laurent’s Eiffel Tower backdrop for their SS19 show was unforgettable. Models through water, in the glittery reflection of Paris’s landmark that was lined with stretches of warm weather palm trees on either side. The highlight of the show had to be the bold snakeskin cowboy boots and metallic platforms that gave dancing reflections off the pool and gave the appearance of walking on water.
Saint Laurent took us on holiday, swapping evening wear for swimsuits. High leg cut-out swimsuits, or asymmetric shapes, in sequins or leopard prints. Paired with the backdrop it was utterly Saint Laurent; contemporary, sexy and strongly feminine. As well as the swimsuits there were corset-waisted trousers, mini dresses, gold leather shorts, sequined playsuits, big shoulders, and rich velvet jackets.
Elitist and luxurious as Saint Laurent always may be, beyond show, on the public side of the the Trocadéro plaza, hundreds of guests came from all over to enjoy the show for free. They sat with their legs dangling from the wall and took in a show normally reserved for the rich or famous.
Saint Laurent is as Parisian as they come. Here’s a daring pair of sunglasses from their latest collection…
