In the eyewear world, many people believe that the big Italian designers reign supreme. And they may be right! We have huge Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, and Prada collections, but we want to give a little extra attention to Miu Miu — the youngest and most avant-garde Italian designer available here at B Sunglasses.
What Does Miu Miu Mean?
As Miu Miu is owned by fashion giant Prada, many people wonder where it got its name from. The answer is simpler than you might think. Miu Miu was founded by Prada’s current head designer, Miuccia Prada — the youngest granddaughter of founder Mario Prada. As Miu Miu was Miuccia’s brainchild, it was only right that the brand be named after her. Miu Miu is Miuccia Prada’s family nickname. The name Miu Miu sounds a little brighter and younger than Prada, which neatly illustrates how it is different from its big sister!
The Birth of the Miu Miu Brand
Miu Miu is one of the Italian fashion industry’s biggest successes in recent years. Between Milan and Rome, Italy has no shortage of big fashion houses, and these big names had reigned supreme, with few challengers throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s. With such big names to compete with, any new fashion label needed to bring something entirely fresh to the scene. And fresh, young, avant-garde fashion design was at the heart of Miu Miu’s brand identity when it was founded in 1993, as a subsidiary of Prada. Whereas Prada was an Italian institution with a classic aesthetic, Miu Miu’s modus operandi was to innovate and keep up with the latest fashion. This fashion flexibility has helped Miu Miu establish itself as one of the top Italian fashion labels in a relatively short amount of time.
What’s the Difference Between Prada and Miu Miu?
We get this question a lot here at B Sunglasses, so it’s worth addressing in this blog post. Most people follow the fashion industry know that Miu Miu is owned by Prada, but they might not know what the difference is between the two brands. It is necessarily reductive to describe Prada’s aesthetic as austere and understated in comparison to Miu Miu’s bolder, more opulent sense of style. This is reductive because there is so much to say about Prada that we’d need to spend a whole blog post just to scratch the surface. However, in the interest of clarity and veracity it’s helpful to think of Miu Miu as the younger, wilder little sister of Prada. Miu Miu enjoys all of Prada’s heritage of style and quality, but it has a brighter colour palette and a more experimental approach to design — and this experimental approach is very apparent in Miu Miu’s eyewear designs…
Which Miu Miu Sunglasses Are Right for You?
Designers are often at their most playful and expressive when they’re designing eyewear — and this is certainly the case with everything in our Miu Miu sunglasses collection. There are many things to consider when shopping for your next pair of designer sunglasses. Consider some of your favourite outfits, for example, and whether they would look good with Miu Miu’s modern, sophisticated aesthetic.
If you’ve read this far, you’re probably already convinced that Miu Miu’s signature sense of style is right for you. What’s left is for you to work out which style/shape of sunglasses will suit you best. We have a comprehensive face-shape guide that can help you figure out which face-shape group you belong to. But if you want to quickly figure out your face shape, you can use a crayon or lipstick to draw around the outline of your face in a mirror, following the hairline and the jawline. Although the shape won’t be a perfect circle, square, rectangle, etc, it will give you a rough idea of which face-shape group you belong to.
Miu Miu Sunglasses for Women with Round or Oblong Faces
Miu Miu’s Italian heritage is especially pronounced in its range of square sunglasses. There’s something about oversized square sunglasses that screams Italy, and Miu Miu more than delivers in this department. Square sunglasses are especially flattering on women with round or oblong faces as the angles add definition to their softer features. As Miu Miu square sunglasses are on the large-to-oversized scale, they often make the wearer’s face look smaller and more feminine by way of contrast.
Miu Miu Sunglasses for Women with Square or Rectangular Faces
Miu Miu is a little more experimental with its range of round sunglasses. Round rims have an unavoidable vintage feel to them — this makes sense when we consider that the circle was the original shape for all eyewear. As Miu Miu prioritises experimentation above orthodoxy, its round sunglasses push and disturb the traditional round shape with bright colours, heart-shaped layers, and ever-so-slight cat-eye shapes in the upper outside corners. Round sunglasses are especially flattering on women with square and rectangular faces, as they soften and balance out their harder angles.
Miu Miu Sunglasses for Women with Heart- or Diamond-shaped Faces
Miu Miu’s cat-eye sunglasses are particularly special. It’s been impossible for any big designer to ignore the recent rise of cat-eye sunglasses, and Miu Miu has made its own valuable contribution to the style. However, rather than simply providing us with several classic cat-eye looks, Miu Miu has experimented with the brows, the silhouettes, with elegant double bridges, etc… Cat-eye and other top-heavy designs are perfect for women with heart- or diamond-shaped faces because they draw the eye to the top of your face, counterbalancing against your pronounced jawline or chin. For a clear idea of the difference between Miu Miu and Prada, compare these sunglasses to our Prada cat-eye sunglasses.
