Running from 22nd March – 13th May is the Keukenhof flower festival in Lisse, Holland. Lisse is known as the flower village, and during the festival a ginormous 32 hectares of the most vibrant and unique flowerbeds are on display. 7 million bulbs will be in bloom in stunning colours, and fragrant aromas that you can explore. The festival is also full of sculptures, artworks and other events to enjoy. Lisse is situated southwest of Amsterdam and is a charming place to roam. Outside of the town, walking and cycling paths wind around flower fields in the country’s tulip growing region. There’s also a majestic castle to see and lots of museums. The perfect summery getaway for your Mum.
Glasgow International Comedy Festival
The annual Glasgow International Comedy Festival returns 8th – 25th March and they’ll be showcasing some top comedy friends, favourite television names and spectacular stand-up stars to a variety of venues across Glasgow. Acts like Elaine C Smith, Rob Delaney, Limmy, Katherine Ryan and Tommy Tiernan will hit the stage over the two weeks. Glasgow is a vast and interesting city to explore anyway, and during this two week period it will be alive with the spirit of comedy.
We know not all Mum’s enjoy a manicure, or relaxing in a spa hotel. Go Ape is a fun option for the more adventurous Mums. Go Ape have 32 locations spread out across the country making it easy to get to in a day for anyone. The tours take you through the forest canopy in a harness. You make your way to the finish line tackling dangling obstacles, facing the lethal drops below and flying around on multiple zip lines. Go Ape is affordable and fantastic for a group activity.
Munich Strong Beer Festival
The Munich Strong Beer festival began last week and runs until 25th March. Munich is famed for its beer, being the home of the gigantic festival Oktoberfest. The Strong Beer Festival is a more mellow introduction to the city, with smaller crowds and lower prices. There’s still lovely local beer to enjoy, as well as dancing on the tables, singing rowdy drinking songs and seeing everyone dressed up in the lederhosen. The festival is actually older than Oktoberfest, it started in the mid 1600s by Munich’s Paulaner monks, and is a great way to celebrate Bavarian culture.
Macy’s Flower Show, New York
A trip to New York will be the highlight of anyone’s year. The Big Apple has a variety of exciting events spreading across each and every month. The weather is still a little cold to be lounging in the rooftop bars, or sunbathing in the parks, but you can still feel fresh and summery at the annual Macy’s Flower Show. The city’s best department store, Macy’s Herald Square, will be full to the brim with jaw-dropping floral arrangements. This years theme is “Once upon a Springtime”, so expect to see displays with fantasy-inspired settings and storybook scenes. The show runs from 25th March to 6th April, and is completely free. It goes without saying that the city has plentiful opportunities to spoil your Mum outside of the Flower Show.
