Everyone knows the name Marc Jacobs. American fashion has been shaped by him for decades. From an early age, Jacobs had an eye for aesthetics and luxury. After the tragic loss of his father he moved in with his grandmother on the Upper West Side of New York. His grandmother shaped his teenage years and encouraged him to follow his passions and live freely. After working for huge names like Louis Vuitton, and winning many, many awards, he established his own eponymous fashion house in 1994.
As well as his success as a designer, Jacobs has always been an influential public figure. He is charismatic, outspoken and loved by everyone. Jacobs has used his position for activism and social commentary throughout his career. Most recently, Marc Jacobs beauty launched the #GratefulNotHateful campaign to coincide with LGBTQ+ Pride Month. The campaign says that it’s not necessary to wait for a parade every year to celebrate pride; we should recognize it every single day. #GratefulNotHateful celebrates self-expression with beauty products in all the colours of the rainbow. Members and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community are photographed wearing each colour of the pride flag, including Jacobs himself who opts for a striking blue eyeliner. Others painted with colour are: Tracey Norman, the first black transgender model; Manny Gutierrez, transgender activist; and Hunter Schafer, model. The campaign is a combination of portraits and videos, where each person talks about their day-to-day experiences and opens up the conversation about Pride throughout the whole year. Jacobs uses vibrancy and bright colours throughout the campaign to celebrate self-expression.
Jacobs doesn’t only use his innovative creativity at work though. Most recently, his proposal to boyfriend Char Defrancesco had everybody talking. It was certainly one of the most creative proposals we’ve ever seen. Whilst munching on tacos and guac in a Chipotle restaurant, Defrancesco was stunned by the arrival of a huge Prince flash mob before Jacobs got down on one knee. Jacobs said he chose Chipotle, the chain eatery, because he knew for certain it would be unexpected. Of course, Defrancesco said yes – how could you turn down a proposal like that?
It’s clear Jacobs has a brilliant personality and a fun spirited nature and this shines through in his designs. Last month, Marc Jacobs announced a brand new collaboration with Disney. This fantasy meets high-fashion collection celebrates Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday. The collection combines street wear and high-end design for a sophisticated but playful style. Pieces include a soft dress and a hoody, and some stunning denim designs for a skirt and jacket. Marc Jacobs campaigns always make headlines and inspire others for their future work. Last year, for its 2017 spring eyewear campaign, the brand made a charming short film featuring model Kiko Mizuhara. In the film, the Japanese style icon enters a shop in a black hoody and jeans. She tries on some dazzling MJ shades and is magically transformed into a party diva. The film is one of the best eyewear campaigns we’ve ever seen. It’s funny, energetic, luxurious, quirky, and leaves you yearning for a pair of sparkling Marc Jacob frames.
We thought 2017’s eyewear campaign would be impossible to match, but for 2018 Marc Jacobs brought out another incredible video. In the hot Las Vegas Desert, British singer Charlie XCX rocks a 70’s diva look in the new collection. The retro inspired frames are bright, vibrant and strong.
