Halloween Inspiration

Netflix users have been hooked this year on the super-natural mystery Stranger Things, so what’s more topical and iconic than donning the look of its heroine. Eleven’s pink babydoll dress, knee-high socks, piercing stare and of course bleeding nose will immediately get you some outfit compliments. And she’s versatile: adopt a platinum blonde wig, or the bald look to complete your costume for Eleven.

The Joker and Harley Quinn

The DC world was hit by a storm this year with the release of Suicide Squad, presenting a collection of all the best supervillains played by some big Hollywood names. Adopt the look of the favourite pair, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Joker (Jared Leto), for a wacky couple’s costume. For Harley Quinn spray your pig tails blue and pink, get some fishnets, sequined hot pants, ripped white t-shirt, bomber jacket and a badass baseball bat. The Joker’s more old-school… but with a little twist. Bright green hair, a purple crocodile jacket and some freaky face paint.

For a 2016 group outfit, the cute and colourful Trolls from the new Dreamworks film are perfect. All you need is a big amount of face paint, a huge amount of hair colour, and a ginormous can of hairspray.

Hearts were broken world-wide on 21 April this year, as the legend of Prince sadly passed away. His eccentricity was certainly his most loved feature and a choice of any of his many outlandish looks for this Halloween would perfectly pay tribute to his career. Perhaps, the Purple Rain look- a purple trench, ruffled shirt and wild afro along with lots of heavy eyeliner. Or maybe the simpler three-lens sunglasses, and thin moustache. The options are endless.

Willy Wonka

Another tribute, because so many heroes passed away this year that we need to show love for. Gene Wilder was an outstanding comedy actor, and most famous for his treasured portrayal of Willy Wonka in the 1971 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story. Another outfit requiring a purple jacket, but add a big cream bow-tie, a violet flowery shirt, a brown top hat and a walking stick. Maybe add a giant bar of chocolate, or if you can persuade a friend to be an Oompa Loompa then even better!

Perhaps a better option if you’re tall, but could still be pulled off otherwise, if it’s executed correctly. Roald Dahl’s BFG made a comeback this year, and the new adaptation was just as heart-warming as we had hoped and the character of the BFG just as loveable. Prepare to receive lots of cuddles from Dahl fans if you choose this outfit on Halloween. You’re going to need: green pants; a white shirt; a brown leather waistcoat; a long trumpet and a goofy pair of big fake ears. To complete the look, add a red-haired Sophie doll.

There’s plenty more iconic options from the year you could go for. There’s already been a few eye-raising ones, ranging from reality TV, Kim Kardashian’s bum, to the politically absurd- Donald Trump’s ‘wall’. Go crazy, but after recent events avoid the clown costumes this Halloween, unless you want to spend your night locked up.
