Some purists will argue that Paris Fashion Week is the most important fashion week. Although New York Fashion week was officially the first of its kind, the whole idea behind the catwalk shows was derived from “defiles de mode” (Salon shows) held in the French capitals couture salons. Although the weather was pretty grey and drizzly, the colourful gaggle of style savvy fashionistas were out in their droves across the city. The shows were filled with bold and exciting designs both outside and in.
Models paraded through the rain in the not-quite-built courtyard of the Yves Saint Laurent headquarters. Creative director Anthony Vaccarello went with sharp, pointy, oversize shoulders and ruffled leather boots with his women’s collection. There was a lot of knee high boots included, and the garments were highlighting the luxurious suedes and leathers that the brand is producing next season. A real sense of glamour was present, and understated class. The brown tumbled leather featured on many of the jackets was a real nostalgic look in to the late 80’s early 90’s, whilst much of the dress wear was cut in a real contemporary way.
Stella McCartney showcased many signature classics with her women’s collection. The show was beautifully elegant and much of it was inspired by the equestrian life. There was a lot of intricately detailed tailoring in trendy oversize fits. For example, a gorgeous lapel just visible through a exquisitely tailored dress. Tweet seemed to be a theme prominent with the collection, and was featured on some baggy, looser fitted jackets. Many of the suits and dresses were said to have referenced old English painter George Stubbs; who painted lots of the English countryside and horses. This included Prince of Wales checks, very long sleeves on the jackets and a beautiful silk trouser suit. McCartney also paid tribute to the late George Michael throughout the show, where her models walked out to a Faith remix, as well as performing a dance routine at the end of the show. A lot of the audience members even got up and danced along, including Stella’s sister Mary. It was all very lovely and exciting.
Singer and designer Rihanna showcased her third collection for the Fenti x Puma line. She completely transformed France’s National Library to display her beautifully coloured new college-inspired collection. Fellow female singer and R&B star Nicki Minaj also made headlines over Paris Fashion Week for her brave outfit choices (We’ll let you look that one up yourself)
