F1 Grand Prix | An interview with Mercedes mechanic Robert Musgrave

The Hungarian leg of the Grand Prix takes place this weekend and Formula One fans are buzzing with excitement to see what the event has in store. This week we decided to interview Mercedes’ Formula One mechanic, 35-year-old Robert Musgrave who is the number one mechanic for Lewis Hamilton. We wanted to find out all about what life is like on the track and which sunglasses he’ll be wearing on location….

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Mercedes…

[I’m] number one mechanic at Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team for Lewis Hamilton’s car and an active member of the pitstop team.

Did you always want to be involved in Formula 1?

No, I wanted to be in the RAF, [however] circumstance prevented this from happening. I had been brought up in and around Motorsport as my father was and still is involved.

Where did your passion for motorsport come from?

I was always interested in cars from a small child; my father used to take me to all sorts of events from rallying to circuit racing and it started there. From about the age of 15 I knew that was the career path I wanted to go down. It wasn’t until the age of 20 I got my first taste of professional motor sport as a mechanic for a British touring car team, and needless to say I was hooked!

Who was your idol in motorsport growing up?

The late Colin McRae was my absolute hero growing up. He was fast, aggressive, crashed a lot but was a real character and I think that is something that is missing in most four wheeled motorsport.

What is your greatest achievement in the sport?

There have been many special races I remember; from my first touring car win at Brands hatch with West Surrey racing and MG to the last two years at Silverstone GP. Having a British driver in our car makes the whole weekend very special, the crowd are always amazing and the atmosphere when we have won has been unforgettable!
However I would definitely say my stand out achievement in the sport to date is for our team winning the teams and drivers Formula One World Championship in 2014!

What do you enjoy most about working for Mercedes?

The team environment is very special and, win or lose, that remains. Don’t get me wrong, there’s disappointment if things don’t go to plan but we spend a lot of time travelling together and if we did not have that environment it would be very difficult.

Do you have a favourite Formula 1 city?

Singapore! It’s where I met my wife so I’ve got to say there [Singapore]

What is your highlight of the season so far?

Winning the last race at Silverstone; it was probably one of the best races of 2015 so far and to come out on top on home soil was brilliant. Also collecting the teams trophy on the podium at the Chinese GP this year was a very special and proud moment.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to spend time with family and friends. It’s good to catch up with people as sometimes time disappears travelling as often as we do!

My Hobbies are clay pigeon shooting, and cycling.

Which pair of sunglasses from the B Sunglasses site would you take away with you?
