Eco-fashion – Stella McCartney

We are all becoming increasingly conscious of the part we must play in maintaining the planet. Sustainability is changing the way industry is driving forward in production, design and marketing. Stella McCartney is synonymous with eco-fashion, her work in proving fashion can be sustainable for our planet’s future is ground-breaking.

Stella McCartney is a British fashion design and vegetarian, seeking to drive fashion forward in an eco-friendly way. Born in 1971, to former Beatle’s star Paul McCartney and animal rights activist Linda McCartney, she spent her youth travelling the world.

Stella McCartney’s commitment to sustainability is evident throughout all her collections and is part of the brand’s ethos to being a responsible, honest, and modern company. At an impressive age of just 13, McCartney had already started to make her own clothes. An internship with Christian Lacroix, when she was 16, increased her passion for design further and she went on to complete an art foundation and then a fashion design degree. On graduating, McCartney worked alongside Edward Sexton, a tailor, to deepen her knowledge of the industry.

McCartney’s design is so remarkable because her collections do not suffer due to her eco-friendly methods, rather they thrive. Also important in her designs is an eagerness to present wearable fashion. McCartney tells of the importance for high fashion to look good on real people, not just on the runway. Inspired by her Mother’s work, Stella McCartney is an animal rights supporter and she omits any leather or fur in her fashion. Instead, her collections are created with vinyl, plastic, raffia, fabric and recycled materials. McCartney’s eponymous brand was one of the first to embrace a sustainable attitude with such vigour in her fashion business. Often emphasising the importance of eco-fashion, McCartney states: ‘I am always asking myself what have done to make this garment more sustainable and what else can we do.’
