This summer, we couldn’t be more excited to announce the introduction of Calvin Klein to B Sunglasses. Calvin Klein epitomises progressive fashion and each season their ad campaigns are irresistibly bold and filled with famous faces. Sunglasses by Calvin Klein are utterly unique. Calvin Klein has been shaping contemporary culture since their establishment in 1968. Although his name is known across the world now, Klein has worked hard for his success and the company did not have a straightforward beginning. In 1960, Klein graduated from the High School of Industrial Arts and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology. With his new knowledge, Klein entered the industry the following year working as a copier in the art department at WWD. After his graduation in 1963, he bagged another job working for a company that made dresses out of a fabric known as “whipped cream.”
Following this role, Klein moved onto bigger things and worked as sketcher at Dan Millstein. Klein has expressed gratitude for this role saying “I learned a lot, because he threw me into the snake pit.” Klein moved onto another company again, beginning at Halldon LTd. This role bagged Klein his first mention in the press in 1967. Klein was, and still is, remarkably determined, and he set his sights on developing his own business. With an old friend Abe Morenstein, the pair began to try and save for their plan. However, it proved harder than they thought. Just before Klein gave up, he was given $2,000 for samples from a childhood friend.
With this financial help, Klein was able to incorporate his own company at the age of 25, and Calvin Klein Ltd was born. Immediately after his first fashion show, a modest production, he was praised ad praised for his work. WWD commented that, “in just 50 pieces, Calvin Klein joins SA’s [Seventh Avenue’s} big names as a designer to watch.” His success spiralled, with everyone rich and famous seeking his designs. In 1973, Klein won the Coty American Fashion Critics award, the first of many awards during his career. At 33, Klein became the youngest designer to be voted into the Coty Hall of Fame.
Not only do celebrities fill their wardrobes with Calvin Klein wears, but they are active in showing their support for the designer as one of their favourite people in the industry. As Vogue, rightly put it this season “NO show on planet fashion attracts the celebrity turnout that Calvin Kleincan claim right now.” In New York earlier this year, Creative Director welcomed huge stars to come and see his latest collection. The rows were filled by Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Laura Dern, ASAP Rocky, Paris Jackson, Millie Bobby Brown, Lupita Nyong’o, Helena Christensen, and modelling legend Cindy Crawford who came to watch her daughter Kaia Gerber walk in the show. With a turn out like that, it’s easy to see Klein as one of the biggest designers there ever was. Nicole Kidman spoke of the show “I was smiling at how he’s so inclusive. He’s so warm and his soul is so pure, and I think you always see that. He’s so warm, and it’s needed. Right? It’s needed.” When asked what her first experience with the brand was, the actress responded quickly “Brooke Shields.”
Klein is known to be bold and often causes some controversy. In 1980, he made his most memorable ad campaign with 15-year-old actress Brooke Shields. She was recruited by Klein to appear in a series of overtly sexy print and television ads (shot by Richard Avedon) for his new line of super-tight jeans. Her infamous line: “Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing,” sparked much controversy but has never been forgotten. Of course, much of Calvin Klein’s triumphs come from their excellence of design. However, each season their campaigns pull you in to a new, even stronger investment with the brand. Always bold, always memorable, Calvin Klein believe in a culture that provokes discovery and brave thinking. They strive to make a positive impact on the world and inspire passion in everyone. Their campaigns celebrate success and individuality. Each campaign is centred on the star of the moment. In striking and modern shoots stars such as Millie Bobby Brown, Paris Jackson, the Kardashians, Justin Beiber, Luptia Nyong’o, Kaia Gerber and many others represent the Calvin Klein house.
Justin Bieber’s campaign for Calvin Klein underwear back in 2016 was one of the most talked about ads of the decade. As well as Bieber, the Kardashian family have featured in iconic campaigns for Calvin Klein underwear. The MyCalvins campaign states: “Unconventional and unapologetic: family makes us who we are. The Kardashians and Jenners wear new, heritage-inflected Monogram styles from CALVIN KLEIN UNDERWEAR, and timeless CALVIN KLEIN JEANS.” In a series of natural photos, the power family show the simplicity but expert design of Klein’s timeless style. Earlier this year, Raf Simons shot another stunning campaign with the handsome actors from Moonlight. The striking photos, captured by Willy Vanderperre, feature actors Trevante Rhodes, Mahershala Ali, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert in the new CK underwear. Moonlight won the Oscar for Best Picture and Simons said the ads were created to celebrate the “revelatory performances in the film of the year.” The director went onto say “It’s an acknowledgement of remarkable actors who are revealing something important of being a man today in what they do.”
Lupita Nyong’o for CK
Our favourite campaign of Klein’s this year is the Calvin Klein Women fragrance ad, celebrating the young icons of Hollywood and women of the past who are inspiring the next generation. Actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Saoirse Ronan front the campaign in a series of videos and photographs. Anne Collier directs the shoot, and appearing alongside the actresses are “icons of feminitity that have shaped their identities, as creatives, and as women”, who are personally selected by the stars. Nyong’o has chosen singer Eartha Kitt and actress Katharine Hepburn, whilst Ronan has selected actress Sissey Spacek and singer and civil-rights activist Nina Simone. The campaign is authentic, stripped back, and progressive; all attributes Klein is known for. “With this fragrance, we wanted to put the concept of plurality centre stage. The campaign is an exploration of femininity – a group of women bonded by a common thread; the desire to have the power to create their own identity, and to support and lead the way for those that come after them,” Raf Simons said.
Lupita Nyong’o said of her choice of inspiring women: “‘Eartha Kitt and Katharine Hepburn are examples of people who didn’t accept the status quo; they made room for themselves. I am drawn to their integrity, and their ability to speak up and speak out for what they believe in, to change the course of history. I admire their fierce artistic points of view and that they did not betray themselves. I aspire to be similarity authentic and full of integrity.” It’s easy to see the parrallels between Lupita’s words and the history of the brand itself. Calvin Klein certainly don’t accept the status quo, and they make room for themselves in the industry every single season with a new vision of fashion.
Eyewear by Calvin Klein is like nothing else on the market this season. Each pair of sunnies are playful, contemporary, and brimming with carefree summer spirit.
The round sunglasses take a retro style and bring it into 2018 summer in a duo of exciting colours.
The black and white striped pair are our favourite pick from Calvin Klein this summer. The thin metal frames, red tinted lenses, and striped pattern, are combined to create an irresistably quirky pair of sunglasses.
Equally as eye-catching, the Milky Orange design are vibrant but utterly versatile. A round pair of Calvin Klein’s are the perfect summer accessory for delving into a book in the summer sun. We took our Calvin’s to Mallorca for a week-long break and they added flare to every outfit in our suitcase.
Stripes feature again in these bold flat top frames. With mirrored lenses and a sophisticated cut out detail, these sunglasses are a bold modern finish to your wardrobe.
Along with suncream, and a giant golden swan (of course), the new Calvin Klein frames are a holiday essential for summer 2018.
