Brand in the Spotlight – Versace

Art and fashion collide in Versace. Always edgy, bold and imaginative, Versace are modern fashion royalty. This summer, Instagram is bursting with pics of bronzed travellers flaunting their latest statement eyewear. Versace’s eyewear collection is the perfect way for you to add adventure to your style for this season of sun.

Versace was founded by Gianna Versace back in 1978 and his eye for art and fashion rocketed his brand to be a favourite amongst the elite. Born in Reggio di Calabria in 1946, to a mother who ran her own dressmaking business, Gianna had strong roots in design. After completing school he went on to work for his mother and after developing and mastering skills of design, he moved to Milan in 1972. In Milan, Gianna began freelancing for Italiain labels such as Genny, Callaghan and Complice. In 1978, he sought independence and launched his own ready-to-wear collection for women. The fashion empire, Versace, was born.

Versace became synonymous with glamorous style, producing a range of siren dresses that became the brand’s trademark. Imagination was key, Gianna used new materials, like aluminium mesh, and new edgy techniques, such as laser technology to fuse leather and rubber together. At a movie premier in 1994, Elizabeth Hurley had tongues wagging as she rocked an iconic piece by Versace- a striking black dress held together at the side by gold safety pins. His eye-catching creations were favourites of many stars, including Elton John, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Moore and even Princess Diana. Versace’s catwalks were as imaginatively created as his collections. Gianna Versace was the first to deploy effective and flattering klieg lighting instead of the traditional overhead lamps. The supermodels featuring in Versace’s ads also strutted the runway for them and each show had celebrities filling the front row.

On 15th July 1997, Versace took a devastating shock as Gianna Versace was murdered outside his home in Miami by a serial gunman. After his tragic death, his younger sister, Donatella Versace took cover as creative director of Versace. The brand’s resilience is admirable and Donatella Versace has succeeded in continuing the success and creativity of company. Her flare for understanding the feminine shape and creating clothes to compliment and impress is outstanding. Versace continues to amaze, inspire and keep everyone eager for their next collection.
