This week Marc Jacobs is our brand in the spotlight. We’re delighted not to welcome a whole load of new arrivals from them, but also to start a brand new competition to win a beautiful pair of Marc Jacobs cateye sunglasses. Find out more here…
Marc Jacobs is constant leading figure in fashion and his work began from an early age. Born on 9th April, 1963, in New York City, Jacobs had a tough start. At the age of 7, his father died from ulcerative colitis – a condition that Marc also suffered from. Following the loss of his father, him and his family suffered serious upheaval, relocating homes often. From this, Jacobs moved in with his grandmother on the Upper West Side when he was a teenager. Jacobs’ grandmother was a leading influence in his life, always encouraging him to follow his passions and live freely. She was well-travelled, educated and had an appreciation for aesthetic beauty and design.
Jacobs studied at Parsons School of Design, winning three honours in his final year. He even sold his graduate project, a collection of large hand-knit sweaters, to New York’s Charivari boutique. His career took off rapidly from there. Jacobs has been extremely successful, particularly in his work at Louis Vuitton as Creative Director as he quadrupled its gross revenue. He introduced his namesake line in 1986 and soon after became the youngest designer ever to win the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. Jacobs has gone on to win many other awards, like the Women’s Designer of the Year Award in 1993.
Jacobs is a charismatic and fascinating figure in the fashion world. Here are some of our favourite facts about him:
– Jacob’s grandmother always encouraged him to pursue fashion. When he lived with her in his teens she taught him how to knit.
– Inspired by the emerging pop culture movement, he brought grunge to the runway, earning him the nickname “guru of grunge.”
– He made his acting debut playing an online porn hustler in the thriller Disconnect, but quickly discovered that acting wasn’t his calling.
– In 2007, Jacobs came to the Christmas party dressed as a giant camel toe.
– Jacobs has 28 tattoos, including one that says “Bros before hos”, and a portrait of SpongeBob SquarePants.
– Jacobs has worked on some remarkable collaborations over the years, but our favourite was his designs for Miss Piggy in 2009 for NYFW.
The Marc Jacobs brand explores the beauty in the unexpected, the everyday. Jacobs believes that we are each the star of our own movie and through the ritual of fashion we can further define our individuality and personality. Their glamorous but edgy, American style is infused in each collection of eyewear.
