Best Dressed Man of 2014

It should be so simple… yet a good suit on its’ own does not a fashionable man maketh. Several celebs have really caught our eye this year and it seems the key to it all is just a hint of swagger (or a pair of shades, should we say…) as the ultimate accessory!

The Emmy’s, Oscars and Golden Globes at the beginning of the year set the bar high for our contenders with Matthew McConaughey, Colin Firth, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston wowing in some fine tailoring with a side of A-List attitude. It seems that the timeless classic look is making a comeback with plenty of retro glamour and European chic spotted in every editorial and Red Carpet spread.

Fashion favourites David Gandy and David Beckham took on the ‘quirky English gent’ version of the look with a contemporary twist thus carving out the ultimate look-du-jour of 2014; a fleeting blur of tattoos, undercuts and beards! However, no one can deny that newcomers Eddie Redmayne (who is starring in the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything), Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington and former Dr. Who actor Matt Smith have given fine dressing a more appropriate and withstanding rock’n’roll edge that stands the test of time – one that certainly doesn’t require painful needlework!

The music world has also been keeping style alive with A$ap Rocky and Tinie Tempah taking on the Best Dressed title of His Royal Yeezy-ness with some hip-hop meets high fashion credentials. Tinie has regularly made our Serial Sunglasses Wearer hitlist with his collection of Cazal and Ray Ban specs so it comes as no surprise that he pops up on our radar year-in, year-out ! On the flipside of the coin we’ve had Theo Hutchcraft exorcising a unique take on the 1980s Nu-Romantic look; one that compliments the Hurts’ frontman’s ethereal music perfectly putting him alongside the likes of Bryan Ferry when it comes to elegant style.

However, after much debate we managed to narrow things down to three finalists who were all very different yet equally as fashion-worthy. Firstly there was Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch who walks away with our Preppy style award with his rotating combinations of laced up Oxfords, off-duty casual Aviator shades and sharp Award Season suits – not to mention that deep purring Eton drawl that makes Alan Rickman sound like ‘Tickle Me’ Elmo . Pharrell Williams follows up the rear with his always effortless, quirky street-style and unrivaled attitude. There aren’t many men who can pull off wearing a giant Vivienne Westwood hat but Pharrell manages with ease!

Finally, our fashion star of the year has to be actor Jared Leto. Who could forget that white tux jacket and glossy long hair as he humbly collected his Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars in January? Jared proved that on and off stage he can rock just about anything – including the usually sin-worthy accessories of guyliner, a blow-dried ombre or a man-bun – like no other man can!
